Bible Reading Plans
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Psalm 119:105
The authority of the Bible is paramount to the Church and the. Scripture is that the Bible alone is God-breathed, is the word of God written, infallible in all that it teaches, and inerrant in the original manuscripts. The whole counsel of God concerning all things necessary for His glory, man’s salvation, faith, and life, is either expressly set down in Scripture, or by good and necessary consequence may be deduced from Scripture: unto which nothing at any time is to be added, whether by new revelations of the Spirit or traditions of men (WCF 1.6). Some call it the Holy Bible, the Word of God, The Sword, Basic Instruction Before Leaving Earth. Bible comes from the Hebrew word τὰ βιβλία (ta Biblia), meaning “the books.” The Bible is not a book but rather a collection of books. Sixty-six books to be correct. This Library of books is divided into two different ‘testaments’, which just means covenant or contract: the Old Testament and the New Testament.
The Bible was written over 1,600 years, by only 40 men. They included shepherds (Hosea and Amos), fishermen (Peter and John), a tax collector (Matthew), a doctor (Luke), and a military general (Joshua). At least four of the writers lived in the royal household: the kings (David and Solomon), a ‘prime minister’ (Daniel), and a cupbearer (Nehemiah). Only a few of them, such as Paul, Luke, and Moses, received the finest education of their time. Originally written in three different languages; Hebrew (Old Testament), Greek (New Testament), and Aramaic (only 200 verses are in Aramaic).
About forty men from different countries, cultures, and centuries all wrote a part of what we call the Bible. From a garden (Genesis) to a city (Revelation), God’s story is a story about a man falling and the promises of God’s redemption found in a man, Jesus Christ, restoring and redeeming. A collection of books that is God’s message to man in harmony and continuity.
“A Bible that’s falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn’t.”
Charles H. Spurgeon

“The Bible contains all the extant revelations of God, which He designed to be the rule of faith and practice for his Church; so that nothing can rightfully be imposed on the consciences of men as truth or duty which is not taught directly or by necessary implication in the Holy Scriptures.”
